
INDIAN GREEN BUILDING COUNCIL
The Indian Green Building Council (IGBC), part of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) was formed in the year 2001. The vision of the council is, "To enable a sustainable built environment for all and facilitate India to be one of the global leaders in the sustainable built environment by 2025".
India's Green Building Council (GBC) promotes green building concepts in the country. The council also closely works with several State Governments, Central Government and other multi-lateral agencies to promote eco-friendly building concepts across the country through its various regional chapters. IGBC is making rapid strides in advancing the Green Building concept through the involvement of stakeholders in the construction industry. As a part of Green Building promotion & awareness activities, IGBC is launching Student Chapters in all the Engineering, Technical and Architecture Colleges. The council's services include developing new green building rating systems, certification courses on green built environment, green building training programmes, IGBC Accredited Professional Exam, product certification etc.,

RIT IGBC STUDENT CHAPTER
Our Institute has joined as an Institutional annual member of IGBC in the year 2021. RIT-IGBC Student Chapter was inaugurated by Dr.C.Velan, Chairman, IGBC Green Education Committee. The basic objective of this student chapter is to spread awareness on Green Buildings amongst the student community and to ignite the idea of green in young minds thereby facilitating India to become one of the global leaders in embracing green building concepts. This chapter will primarily help to encourage and promote sustainability led initiatives amongst our students.
The IGBC Student Chapter will benefit from activities such as:

- Opportunities to participate in IGBC Events
- Internship opportunities for students on green building

Seminar on Energy Consrvation was organized by RIT IGBC Student Chapter on 30th August 2024 at Civil Seminar Hall from 03.30 PM to 04.30 PM. Mr.R.Arun Kumar, IGBC Accredited Professional, Assistant Professor (Senior Grade), Department of Mechanical Engineering, Ramco Institute of Technology, Rajapalayam was the Resource person for this Seminar. Around 65 participants from IV Students of (Civil, EEE & Mechanical) attended this program and got insights into Energy Conservation methods thereby reducing the demand on the earth's natural resources. R.Ramshankar, IV Year/Mech, M.Ajay, III Year/Mech and J.M.Naveen, III Year/EEE were the student coordinators. Mr.R.Venkatesh, AP/Mech and Mr.E.Thangam, AP(SG)/EEE were the faculty coordinators.

Eco Build Off - Quiz and Collaborate Event was organized by RIT IGBC Student Chapter on 13th September 2024 at RIT HARITA Centre of Excellence from 11.30 AM to 12.30 PM. Mr.S.Guru Balaji, III Year EEE (RIT IGBC Student Convener), Ms.S.Bhuvaneshwari, II Year EEE, Mr.K.Arumuga Kathathar, III Year Civil (RIT IGBC Student Convener), Ms.Jeevika Kannan and Mr.M.Muruga Sundar, II Year Civil (RIT IGBC Event Organizers) Ramco Institute of Technology, Rajapalayam were coordinated the entire event. Appreciation certificates were given along with prizes for first three teams from RIT IGBC Student Chapter Convener, Dr.S.Dharmar, HoD/Civil. Also E-certificates from RIT IGBC Student Chapter has been given to all the participants who successfully completed feedback. This Quiz and Collaborate Event on the occasion of Celebrating World Green Building Week 2024 benefited a total of 36 Participants II, III & IV Year Civil, EEE & Mechanical Engineering Students of RIT. This session has been coordinated by Mrs.A.Leema Margret, AP/Civil, Mr.E.Thangam, AP(SG)/EEE and Mr.R.Venkatesh, AP/Mech.

RIT IGBC Student Chapter in association with Department of Civil Engineering organized a technical webinar on the topic Solar water pumping systems on 29th October 2024. The students from second year civil had participated in the event and the total count is 37 nos. Mrs. A. Leema Margret AP/Civil and Mrs. B. Bharani Baanu, AP/Civil, are the faculty Coordinators. The student coordinators are Ms. Bala Surya Kumari, Mr. Kathirvel & Mr. Muruga Sundar, of second year civil delivered the welcome note, chief guest introduction and vote of thanks. The resource person, Ms.R.Hema Karthika, Sustainability Consultant, Grundfos Pumps India Pvt.Ltd, Chennai and RIT Alumni delivered her presentation on Solar water pumping system through her presentation slides and videos in order to make the students to understand the technology with more clarity. The presentation content details that the solar water pumps can provide an economical and energy efficient solution for remote watering needs, pros and cons of using solar water pumps etc., The students were encouraged to ask questions to the resources person once the presentation were completed. The students enquired about the performance efficiency of the solar water pump, their market availability, affordability and so on. The resource person too answered in a detailed manner and more precisely too.

The session on Sustainable Built Environment Water & Wastewater Management was organized by RIT IGBC Student Chapter in association with Department of Civil Engineering on 24th October 2024 at B3L05 from 10.00 AM to 11.30 AM. The Resource person for this guest lecture was Dr. C. Ramprasad, IGBC Accredited Faculty, Senior Assistant Professor I, School of Civil Engineering for Bioenergy, SASTRA Deemed University, Thanjavur. Ms. S. Bala Surya Kumari, II Year Civil welcomed the Resource Person, Faculty members and the students. She introduced the chief guest. Dr. C. Ramprasad. The resource person gave an Introduction to Sustainability in Civil Engineering, water resource management, sustainable wastewater treatment techniques, future trends and innovations. This session benefited a total of 43 Participants II-year Civil Engineering Students. Ms. S. Bala Surya Kumari, II year civil proposed the vote of thanks. Faculty coordinators are Mrs. C. Subha, Assistant Professor (Senior Grade), and Mrs. R. Kalaimani, Assistant Professor, Civil Engineering, RIT.

The RIT IGBC Student Chapter, in association with the Career Guidance Cell, Department of Civil Engineering, organized a technical webinar on "Introduction to Sustainable Development (Green Crackers)" on February 5th, 2025, at the Civil Seminar Hall from 2:00 PM to 3:30 PM. The event saw active participation from 37 first-year Civil Engineering students. Mr. V. Jeevanantham, AP/Civil, faculty coordinator, delivered the welcome note, speaker introduction. The resource person, Er. Krishnakumar, Project Manager CSIR NEERI Race facility, Sivakasi delivered an insightful presentation on "Introduction to Sustainable Development (Green Crackers)," emphasizing the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and their significance in civil engineering for building a better future. The session elaborated on the research activities related to the development of Green Crackers for a pollution-free environment. At the end of the webinar, an interactive Q&A session was conducted, where students actively participated and raised insightful queries, which were addressed in detail by the resource person. The session concluded with Mr. V. Ragavan, AP/Civil, faculty coordinator, delivering the vote of thanks and collecting student feedback on the event.

Painting Competition on Dream Your Future in a Green Home was organized by RIT IGBC Student Chapter in association with Department of Civil Engineering on 28th February 2025 at Drawing Hall A3L01 from 03.00 PM to 4.30 PM. Totally 36 participants registered from I, II and III Year Civil Engineering. Out of which all the 36 students participated in this painting/drawing competition. The objective of the painting competition, Dream Your Future in a Green Home, organized as part of the National Science Day 2025 celebrations for Civil I, II, and III Year students under the IGBC Student Chapter, is to inspire young minds to envision and creatively express sustainable and eco-friendly living spaces. The theme of this competition has already been informed to the students through student coordinators. Participants came up with A3 Size paper, color sketches, crayons, color pencils etc. to attend this competition. Ms.Jeevika Kannan, II Year Civil and Hameetha Khazana A, I Year Civil welcomed the gathering and gave instructions to the participants before the event starts. Finally student drawings were evaluated by Mrs.A.Leema Margret and Mr.V.Ragavan, faculty coordinators of this competition based on drawings theme, composition, creativity, neatness and colour scheme. In the event around 36 students participated and the top nine winners were given with prizes and appreciation certificates from RIT IGBC Student Chapter Convener, Dr.S.Dharmar, HoD/Civil. Also Participation certificates have been given to all the participants who had successfully completed their feedback. At last, Mrs.A.Leema Margret, Assistant Professor, Department of Civil Engineering proposed the vote of thanks.

Workshop on Transforming the World through Sustainability was organized by RIT IGBC Student Chapter in association with Department of Civil Engineering on 21st August 2025 at Civil Seminar Hall from 10.00 AM to 04.00 PM. The Resource person for this guest lecture was Mr.P.Karthick Raja, Sustainability Engineer, Earthwise Consultant,Madurai. Ms. S. Bala Surya Kumari, II Year Civil welcomed the Resource Person, Faculty members and the students. She introduced the chief guest Mr.P.Karthick Raja. The resource person gave an Introduction about Green Buildings, Why Green Buildings needed and Green Rating System and opportunities in green industries and skills that can contribute to a sustainable future. This session benefited a total of 50 Participants III and IV-year Civil, Mechanical and EE Students. Ms.K P Priya, II year civil proposed the vote of thanks. Interactive Session on IGBC Green Accredited Professionals Insights/ Roles/Needs/Industry demand (Virtual) was organized by RIT IGBC Student Chapter on 12th July 2023 at CADD Laboratory from 03.00 PM to 05.00 PM. The Resource person for this program was Mr.Anand Muthukrishnan, Deputy Executive Director, IGBC, Mrs.Sri Rekha Chandra, Senior Counsellor, Green Education. The resource person highlighted the importance of sustainable construction practices and how the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) accreditation enhances the skill set of professionals in the growing green building sector. The discussion emphasized the need for civil engineers to adopt eco-friendly designs, energy-efficient building materials, and sustainable development strategies to meet global environmental challenges. Industry trends, career opportunities, and the role of IGBC accreditation in improving employability were also explored, making it an essential knowledge-sharing event for aspiring green professionals. This session benefited a total of 30 Participants I year Civil Engineering Students of RIT. Faculty coordinator was Mrs.A.Leema Margret, Assistant Professor, Department of Civil Engineering, RIT.

The RIT IGBC Student Chapter organized How to become IGBC AP An Awareness Program on IGBC Accredited Professional Exam: Preparation & Strategies on 29th August 2023. Mr.J.Saravanan, IGBC Accredited Professional, Assistant Professor, Department of Civil Engineering, PSR Engineering College, Sivakasi was the Resource person for this lecture. Around 75 Students from III, IV Year of (Civil, EEE & Mechanical) attended this awareness program and got insights into the need of Green Building Professionals in India, the Role of IGBC AP, Opportunities in the Industry, IGBC Course Content & Key Focus Areas, the IGBC AP Exam etc., S.Yuvaraj, III Year/Civil, K.Srikanth, III Year/EEE and L.Saravana Kumar, III Year/Mech were the student coordinators. Mr.V.Ragavan, AP/Civil and Mr.R.Venkatesh, AP/Mech were the faculty coordinators.

The RIT IGBC Student Chapter in association with Department of Civil Engineering organized a Virtual Session on "Green Railway Stations - Sustainable Transport at the heart of Sustainable development goals" on 19th October 2023 via Google meet. Ar.Saurav Choudhury, Counsellor Green Built Environment, Architect & Urban Planner, Indian Green Building Council (IGBC), CII-Sohrabji Godrej Green Business Centre, Hyderabad was the Resource person for this session. Around 60 participants from II, III, IV Students of (Civil, EEE & Mechanical branches) attended this expert lecture, interacted with the resource person and got insights into Indian Green Railway station Initiatives taken by IGBC, WorldGBC - IGBC Collaboration Global projects and IGBC Mission on Net Zero etc., This session has been coordinated by Mr.T.Chockalingam, AP(SG)/Civil and Mrs.A.Leema Margret, AP/Civil under the able guidance and presence of Mr.Vivek Venugopal, Executive Officer(Southern India), CII, IGBC throughout the session.

RIT IGBC Student Chapter in association with Department of Civil Engineering organized a Poster Designing Competition on the topic Climate Change and Green Buildings on 26th October 2023 at Civil Seminar Hall. Totally 32 participants registered from I, II and III Year Civil and Mechanical Engineering. 14 Students participated in the poster presentation competition. Mrs.D.Darling Helen Lydia, AP/Civil and Mrs.C.Subha, AP(SG)/Civil were the faculty coordinators. The Student Coordinators were Mr.R.Ponnusangili - IV Year Civil, Ms.G.Gowri - III Year Civil and Ms. N. Sudha - II Year Civil. 14 Students presented their posters in batches on various topics such as Climate Change, Impact of Climate change on global biodiversity, Climate Change and Green Buildings, Climate impacts dos and donts, Green Building merits etc., Presentations were evaluated by Mrs.C.Subha, AP(SG)/Civil and Mrs.R.Kalaimani, AP/Civil.

The RIT IGBC Student Chapter organized a Seminar on "Energy efficient Technologies to approach Net Zero for Buildings" on 5th December 2023 at 11.00 AM in Civil Seminar Hall. Mr.E.Thangam, Assistant Professor(Senior Grade), Department of Electrical & Electronics Engineering, Ramco Institute of Technology, Rajapalayam was the Resource person for this session. Around 65 participants from I & II Year Students of (Civil, EEE & Mechanical branches) attended this seminar and got benefitted.

Ms.R.Jeyasudha, Sustainability Engieer, LEED GA, ActiveScore AP, Oneclick LCA Specialist, Innowell Engineering International Pvt.Ltd, Sivakasi was the Resource person for this lecture. She elaborated the importance of sustainability in present World. She also explained about IGBC Accredited Professional and IGBC - Accredited Professional Associate and its benefits to the students. Around 60 Students from III, IV Year of (Civil, EEE & Mechanical) and faculty members attended this lecture. RIT IGBC Student Chapter in association with Department of Civil Engineering organized a Technical Quiz on Water Management in Green Buildings" on 22.03.2024 through Google Forms for the students of I, II, III and IV Year of Civil, EEE & Mechanical departments. The objective of this Technical Quiz on the occasion of World Water Day 2024, was to enhance the awareness and understanding of students regarding sustainable water management practices in green building design. The quiz aimed to engage students in topics such as efficient water usage, rainwater harvesting, greywater recycling, and innovative technologies for water conservation. A total of 77 students participated, out of which 59 students scored more than 60%. E-certificates were awarded to all students who achieved a score exceeding 60%.

Department of Civil Engineering, Ramco Institute of Technology in association (RIT-STRUCTA), ICI & IGBC Students Chapter organized a guest lecture on Alternate Building Technologies on 04.11.2022. The guest of honor for this function was Er.T.P.Madhusudanan, Chief Consultant, Habitat Pathanamthitta. Mr.S.A.P.R. Karthick sir, vice chairman, builders association of India, Madurai centre felicitated the event. The Chief guest shared his experiences in using mud as an alternate building material. It was really an eye opener session. The main objective of this lecture is to know the various modern construction materials that are actually using in the field other than the materials they studied through their curriculum and syllabus. 84 students of II, III & IV year participated and benefited from this program. RIT IGBC- Student Chapter organised a Quiz Competition on Green Building Practices in view of celebrating World Engineering Day for Sustainable Development 2023 with the theme of "Engineering innovation for a more resilient world" on 4th March 2023. 91 students were participated from all the branches of RIT and other colleges. Appreciation E-Certificates were issued to those who scored more than 60% of the marks. Dr.M.Indhumathi, ASCP/Civil and Mr.A.Manicka Maamallan, AP/Civil organised the Quiz Competition. Student Coordinators were Mr.S.Dinesh Babu and Ms.V.Porkodi, II year of Civil Engineering.

Department of Civil Engineering, in association with the IGBC Student Chapter organized a Expert Lecture on A Career in Sustainable Building Industry on on 09th March 2023 at Civil Seminar Hall (Resource Person joined through Google Meet). The Resource person for this lecture was our distinguished alumni, P.Karthick Raja, Consulting Engineer, Conserve Consultants Pvt. Ltd., Chennai from 2018-2022 batch. The resource person gave lecture on introduction about green constructions, its environmental and societal benefits, the certifications associated with green buildings, procedures for clearing green building related certifications and their scope and job opportunities in green building constructions. Around 50 Participants II & III-year Civil Engineering Students attended this lecture. Mrs.C.Subha AP(SG)/Civil & Mrs.R.Kalaimani AP/Civil were the faculty coordinators.

IGBC Student Chapter organized an Expert Lecture on "Green & Net Zero Buildings: Challenges & Resolutions" on 13th March 2023 via Google meet. Dr.Shivraj Dhaka, Senior Counsellor, Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Indian Green Building Council was the Resource person for this lecture. Mrs.A.Leema Margret, AP/Civil welcomed the gathering and Mr.T.Chockalingam, AP(SG)/Civil introduced the resource person. The resource person started his lecture by defining What is meant by Green Building. He showcased one of the highest rated green buildings in India CII-Sohrabji Godrej Business Centre, Hyderabad to the participants. Then, he explained the key areas of the green building rating system such as site selection and planning, water conservation, energy efficiency, building material & resources and indoor environmental quality. The second-half of the session, he discussed net zero buildings and its rating tools. He also explained the approach for achieving Net Zero Energy status during his presentation. Finally, the session was ended with Question & Answer from students and faculty members. Mrs.A.Leema Margret, AP/Civil Engineering proposed the vote of thanks. Around 68 participants from II, III, IV Students of (AI&DS, Civil, EEE, ECE, Mechanical), faculty members of RIT and Mr.Vivek Venugopal, Executive Officer, CII, IGBC attended this expert lecture. RIT IGBC Student Chapter in association with Department of Civil Engineering organized a Virtual Knowledge Sharing Session on Integrating Geo-spatial and ML Techniques in Irrigation & Water Resources Engineering on 6th April 2023 at CAD Laboratory (Resource Person joined through Google Meet). Dr.Surendar Natarajan, Assistant Professor, Department of Civil Engineering, SSN College of Engineering, Kalavakkam, Chennai was the Resource person for this session. Mr.J.Suresh Anand, III Civil Engineering, welcomed and introduced the resource person to the gathering. The resource person gave lecture on introduction about Geospatial and ML Techniques in Irrigation Engineering, various Remote Sensing softwares, mapping crop pattern through Q-GIS Software, Case studies on determining Ground water potential and discussed best portal for fetching remote sensing RS data satellite and aerial images etc. This session benefited a total of 24 Participants III & IV year Civil Engineering Students of RIT. Mrs.A.Leema Margret, Assistant Professor, Department of Civil Engineering and Faculty Coordinator of this session proposed the vote of thanks. Totally 34 participants registered from I, II and III Year Civil Engineering. Out of which 14 students participated in drawing competition. Mr.M.Manikanda Balaji and Mr.K.Logeshkanna of III Civil, student coordinators of the competition welcomed the gathering and gave instructions to the participants before the event starts. Finally student drawings were evaluated by Mrs.A.Leema Margret and Mrs.R.Kalaimani, faculty coordinators of this competition based on drawings theme, composition, creativity, neatness and colour scheme. Rakavi R, III Year Civil won first prize, Gayathiri V, II Year Civil won second Prize and Nana Shree N M, I Year Civil won third prize for this event.

Events Organised during 2021-2022
A green building is one that uses less water, optimizes energy efficiency, conserves natural resources, generates less waste and provides healthier spaces for occupants, as compared to a conventional building. In order to accelerate a step towards the goal of sustainability, IGBC (Indian Green Building Council) student chapter was initiated at Ramco Institute of Technology, Rajapalayam followed by the inauguration of the IGBC Student Chapter on 17th August 2021 at 03:30 pm through Google meet platform. RIT-IGBC Student Chapter Launch and Inaugural Address was given by Dr.C.Velan, Chairman, IGBC Green Education Committee. Mr.M.Anand, Principal Counsellor, IGBC, CII delivered a special talk on Green Buildings, Green Education and Career Opportunities. A total of 45 RIT students and faculty members participated in the online session, taking advantage of the opportunity to learn more about green building

RIT IGBC Student Chapter in association with Department of Civil Engineering and Career Guidance Cell of RIT organized a Technical Quiz on Green Building Concepts" on 26.01.2022 through Google Forms in the event of celebrating the 73rd Republic Day and 4th Harit-Prem Bharat Mahotsav for the students of III and IV Year of all the departments. Among 54 registered students, 13 students were participated from all the branches of RIT. E-Certificates were awarded to the students those who scored more than 70%. Mr.J.Ram Prashath, AP/Civil & Mr.V.Ragavan, AP/Civil Organised the Quiz Competition. Student Coordinators were Mr.K.Jeevanbabu, III/Civil & Mr.S.Rahul, III/Mechanical.

RIT IGBC & ICI Student Chapters in association with Department of Civil Engineering organized a drawing competition on Sketch Your Dream House ( Theme: As Green Building leads to sustainability") on 26.02.2022 for the I Year Civil Engineering students in the event of celebrating the National Science Day 2022. In the event around 07 students participated and the top two winners were facilitated with appreciation certificates and cash prizes. M. Sasikumar, I Year Civil won first prize and S. Pandiaraj, I Year Civil won second prize in the competition. The Mr.G.Karthikeyan, AP(SG)/Civil and Mr.J.Ram Prashath, AP/Civil were the faculty coordinators.

Training and Placement Centre, Ramco Institute of Technology, conducted a Webinar on Sustainability goals and Job opportunities in the sustainability field in association with RIT IGBC Student Chapter on 10.03.2022. The Resource Persons for this session were Ms.Supritha A, IGBC AP, LEED Green Associate Manager, Sustainability, Innowell Engineering Pvt. Ltd., Bangaluru and Ms.Nandhini Devi S, LEED Engineer, Innowell Engineering Pvt. Ltd, Sivakasi. Both of them explained the opportunities in the sustainability field and the emerging trends and related job opportunities. The main objective of this webinar is to create awareness on sustainability concepts, recent advancements and various opportunities in the sustainability field. 86 Students of Civil and Mechanical, 3 faculty members of RIT attended this webinar and benefitted. Mr.J.Ramprashath, AP/Civil and Mrs.K.B.Uthra, ATPO coordinated this webinar.
