The Institution of Engineers (India), Student Chapter - MECH

The Institution of Engineers, India student chapter was started in our department in December 2018. Various activities like workshops, Webinars, Competitions, etc., are conducted from IE(I) for the benefit of student members to showcase and improve their skills.

The benefits of being a member of the IE students chapter are the following:

  • Participation in various Technical Activities of the students chapter.
  • Opportunity to meet fellow engineers for professional interaction.
  • Technical papers presented in the Seminar and Technical Sessions by students are awarded in the Annual Convocation and Technicians/ Students Convention.
  • The Students Chapters may participate in Regional Conclave to be organized in the emerging field of engineering by engineering college and polytechnic region wise.
  • The opportunity to participate in technical events e.g. seminars, Symposia, Conventions, Workshops, etc were organized by IEI State/Local Centres.
  • The Students Chapter Newsletter is distributed amongst the Chapter members which is sent to the advisers. IEI Students Chapter Newsletter may be also browsed through ieindia.org.

Industrial visit to Kwality coil Products (P) Ltd

On behalf of institution of Engineers, India student chapter an industrial visit is organized to kwality coil Products (P) Ltd., Alagarkoil main road, Madurai on 05.05.2022. 20 students from II & III-year Mechanical Engineering along. Er.L.Sakthivel, IEI member and Er.M.Savariraj, IEI member from Madurai Local Centre participated in the visit. with Dr J.Jabinth, AP/Mechanical, RIT & Faculty Adviser IE(I) student chapter Mechanical.

Recent Trends in Metal Extraction and Recycling

Extramural Lecture Series on the topic "Recent Trends in Metal Extraction and Recycling" was organized by Department of Mechanical Engineering, Ramco Institute of Technology, Rajapalayam on 22.04.2022. The main objective of these ELS is to impart knowledge about cutting edge technologies related to material Extraction and Recycling Process. The Resource Person was Dr.Sanjay Kumar, Chief Scientist & Head, Metal Extraction & Recycling Division, CSIR-National Metallurgical Laboratory Jamshedpur & Professor, Academy of Scientific and Innovative research, New Delhi. Prof. Sanjay Kumar gave a brief introduction about possible reason for Megatrends in metal Extraction. He then explained how the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) in climatic conditions, Cost consideration & Green Production. The various Tools & Technologies of industrial revolution were briefed by the resource person, followed by the Artificial Intelligence, IoT, Big Data & 3D Printing and its benefits. Why decarbonisation in steel industry & CO2 reduction strategy was explained by the professor. Towards the second half of the session, Professor gave urban ore recycling important. He shared the (Technology, Environmental, Social) challenges in E-waste Management. He finally completed the session by sharing the CSIR-NML initiatives for rare earths extraction strategies. Dr.J.Jabinth, AP/Mechanical & Faculty Adviser of IE(I) Mechanical Student chapter Coordinated the program. Mr.L.Karthikeyan, AP/Mech moderated the session. The vote of thanks was delivered by Dr.P.Suresh Kumar, ASP/Mechanical, RIT. The total no. of participants presented in the webinar was 70. The entire sessions were interactive where faculties raised their doubts and a precise explanation was given by the resource person. The overall feedback of the program was excellent. Finally, the participants were distributed with the e-certificates after filling the feedback form.

Workshop on Drafting Using CREO

On behalf of institution of Engineers, India Mechanical student chapter of RIT, a workshop was conducted for III Year mechanical students on 08.03.2022. CREO is one of the modelling software used by many organizations universally. In order to give advanced level of training to students, drafting of assembled components is taught to students. In this workshop students learned about the drafting concepts like types of views, Bill of materials, Balloon generation, scaling, section views and wireframe model. The session was useful to students. A total of 5 students participated in the workshop. Dr.J.Jabinth, AP/Mech & Faculty adviser of IE(I)-Mech acted as resource person and coordinated the workshop.

Various Funding Opportunities in DST for Engineering Institutions

The Department of Mechanical Engineering organized Extramural lecture series (ELS)- NT005 - Online webinar titled Various funding opportunities in DST for Engineering Institutions on 06.02.2022 for all the faculty members (Internal & External) in various Engineering Colleges. Dr. S.K. Varshney, Adviser\ Scientist G, Department of Science and Technology, Government of India acted as resource person for the program. Mr.L.Karthikeyan, AP/Mech delivered welcome address and Dr.J.Jabinth, AP/Mech & Faculty Adviser IE(I) Mech introduced the resource person of this event. He detailed about the schedule of event. The resource person explained about the various fellowship like INSPIRE, NPDF, TARE, Swarna Jayanti Fellowship, FIST, Junior Research Fellowship, senior Research Fellowship, Research Associateship and few upcoming fellowships. At the end of the session participants clarified their doubts. Mr. L. Karthikeyan, AP/Mech acted as a moderator for the session and Dr.V.Sivakumar, AP/Mech delivered vote of thanks for the program. Totally, there are 125 registrations are received across all major cities of our state and few are from other states also. Out of which 62 participants attended via Google Meet Platform. All the 62 Participants received their certificate after they completed all procedures.

Basic of Canva / Poster Design and Certificate Generation

On behalf of RIT, Department of Mechanical Engineering organized Lecture titled Basic of Canva / Poster Design and Certificate Generation on 11.11.2021 for all the IE(I) Students in our College. Mr. M. Thojesh Nandha, IV Mechanical acted as resource person for the program. Dr.J.Jabinth, AP/Mechanical, Ramco Institute of Technology coordinated in this program. Students were given a hands-on session in the poster creation using the Canva platform and also about the basic tools used in Canva. They have also taught about the certificate creation and how to generate the certificate automatically usng the google form. Totally, there are 17 students registered IE(I) Students in our College. Out of which 17 participants attended. All the 17 Participants received their certificate after they completed all procedures.

LATEST ADVANCES AND FUTURE PROSPECTS OF WELDING TECHNOLOGY

Department of Mechanical Engineering organized Extramural lecture series (ELS)- NT003 - Online webinar titled Latest Advances and Future Prospects of Welding Technology on 27.10.2021 for all the faculties and Students from various Engineering Colleges. Mr.L.Karthikeyan, AP/Mech delivered welcome address. Mr.N.Rajasekaran, Former DGM, BHEL, Trichy acted as resource person for the program. The resource person started with the various activities carried out by Indian Welding Society (IWS). He explained the various types of advanced welding methods available in market. The enhancement of production efficiency can be achieved using latest welding techniques. A small intro about various welding methods like friction welding, Friction stir welding, electro gas welding, butt welding, electron beam welding, variable polarity plasma arc welding etc is given. The parameters which affect the welding zone is explained. The challenges faced in fusion welding are explained clearly by the resource person. Mr. L. Karthikeyan, AP/Mech acted as a moderator for the whole event and Dr. J. Jabinth, AP/Mech delivered vote of thanks. Totally, there are 154 registrations are received across all major cities of our state and few are from other states also. Out of which 107 participants attended via Google Meet Platform.

RESEARCH ASPECTS AND ROLE OF ENGINEERS IN OCEAN DATA COLLECTION

Department of Mechanical Engineering organized Extramural lecture series (ELS)- NT004 - Online webinar titled Research Aspects and Role of Engineers in Ocean Data Collection on 19.12.2021 for all the faculties and Students in various Engineering Colleges. Mr.L.Karthikeyan, AP/Mech delivered welcome address and Dr.J.Jabinth, AP/Mech introduced the resource person of this event. He detailed about the schedule of event. Dr.R.Venkatesan, Scientist G & Head Ocean Observation, NIOT, chennai acted as resource person for the program. The resource person explained about the development of technologies for deep sea mining and under water vehicles. He explained the different works carried out by NIOT in underwater vehicles. He also explained about the projects related to extraction of energy from ocean. The ships used to do research along the coast. He showed the film of David Attenborough hydrothermal vent, the sources of ocean observation like satellites using microwaves, sub surface monitoring instruments. He also discussed about the transmission of data to the surface of ocean by induction principle and then to the satellite. He also discussed about the various marine meterological sensors used, design of mooring system. At the end of the webinar, Mr. L. Karthikeyan, AP/Mech acted as a moderator for the whole event and Dr.V.Sivakumar, AP/Mech delivered vote of thanks. Totally, there are 91 registrations are received across all major cities of our state and few are from other states also. Out of which 52 participants attended via Google Meet Platform. All the 52 Participants received their certificate after they completed all procedures.

AVERAGES: GENERAL APTITUDE

On behalf of RIT, Department of Mechanical Engineering, IE (I) Online Quiz on General Aptitude was conducted on 01st Dec 2021. Mr.J.Jabinth, AP/Mechanical, Ramco Institute of Technology co-ordinated this Online Quiz Contest. The students were asked to attend the 25 questions and submit their answers in My Quizzes 25 questions were asked from General Aptitude topic. The level of question set was intermediate level. Overall 57 Students from our institutions attend in this online quiz. Among that 05 Students cleared all 25 Questions, 10 students cleared 24 questions and 04 students cleared 23 questions successfully. The certificate were provided for top three candidates and the Participants certificates are provided for all participants in this quizs competitions awarded with e-certificates by mail.

DRONE DESIGN AND AVIATION

On behalf of RIT, Department of Mechanical Engineering organized a workshop on the "Unmanned Aerial Vehicle, Mechanism of Quad rotor, how to operate a Drone on the Drone Deploy Forum" on 19 Nov. 2021, for IEI members and students from Department of Mechanical engineering. Nearly 25 students acquired knowledge about UAVS, RPAVS, How to aviate DJI Mavic Air Pro-2. Mr.S.Sridharan, IV Mech acted as resource person for this program. This event was organized by Mechanical RIT in association with IE(I)-Student Chapter Mechanical. Dr.J.Jabinth, AP/Mechanical, Ramco Institute of Technology coordinated the program. Totally, 25 students registered for the workshop. Out of which 25 student participants attended the session. Students clarified there queries with the resource person at the end of the session. Soft copy of participation Certificates have been sent their mail id.

SCOPE OF UNMANNED AERIAL VEHICLES IN DEFENSE SECTOR

On behalf of RIT, Department of Mechanical Engineering organized a workshop titled Scope of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles in Defense Sector on 04.12.2022 for all the IE(I) Students in our College. Dr.J.Jabinth, AP/Mechanical, Ramco Institute of Technology coordinated the program. In this Lecture Mr.S.Santhosh, IV Mech presented about the categories of drones available and how they are used in defense application. He also explained the future of this domain in future warfare. He also told how as a mechanical engineer can enter into the domain and what are the skillsets needed to excel in This domain. Students also clarified their doubts with the resource person at the end of the session. Totally, there are 25 students registered from IE(I) Mechanical Students chapter from our College. Out of which 23 participants attended. All the 23 Participants received their certificate.

ADVANCES IN NUCLEAR ENGINEERING AND SCIENCE

The department of Mechanical Engineering in association with institution of Engineers, India student chapter organized an online webinar for faculty members and research scholars titled Advances in Nuclear Engineering & Science on 21.08.2021 from11 PM to 12 PM. Around 98 participants attended the program. Dr. W. S. Aruldoss Kanthiah, Outstanding Scientist & Former Director, Heavy Water Board, Department of Atomic Energy, Govt. of India, Mumbai acted as resource person for the event. The resource person started with Brief history of Department of Atomic Energy and shared his research experience in atomic field along with case studies. He also explained about the recently developed R&D centre in a hospital near Madurai for Cancer Treatment. He also has given many examples where atomic low dose radiation can be used as source for longevity. He also explained the scope of research available in this field. Participants clarified their doubt at the end of the session. Mr.L.Karthikeyan, AP/Mech delivered welcome address and acted as a moderator for the whole event. Mr. J.
