The Department of Civil Engineering is established in the year 2013. Presently, it offers a 4-year Bachelor of Engineering (B.E) degree programme in Civil Engineering following Anna University curriculum. The curriculum broadly covers important fields such as Surveying, Geotechnical Engineering, Structural Engineering, Hydraulics and Water Resources Engineering, Construction Materials and Practices, Environmental Engineering and Transportation Engineering.

The Department emphasises on modern laboratories to cater the needs of academic and research activities. It is well equipped with computational facilities and resources both in terms of hardware and software. The Department constantly facilitates students from other departments of the Institute as a gesture of support to their academic, co-curricular and research desires.

The Department has well-qualified and committed faculty members, supporting staff and modern infrastructure in the form of elegant and smart classrooms, spacious laboratories, latest machinery and equipment. Students are encouraged to participate in co-curricular and extra-curricular activities to acquire leadership qualities. The Civil Engineering Students Association has been functioning for the benefit of the students. It serves as a platform for students to make technical presentations, gain knowledge about recent advancements and bring together novel ideas. This Association aims at bridging the gap between the academic and the industry by inviting renowned industrialists and academicians to interact with students. Guest lectures, industrial visits, site visits, etc., are organized and value added courses are conducted on regular basis to ensure that students are conversant with recent developments in the field of Civil Engineering. Institute–Industry collaboration and placement-orientedtraining are initiated with a view to enhance the career prospects of the students.


Survey Laboratory has been established over an area of 166sq.m. and it serves the needs of Civil Engineersin basic plane surveying and supports advanced surveying courses as well to prepare maps and plans which are used in various constructions.Students can be well trained to use all surveying equipments, prepare LS & CS, contour maps and carryout surveying works related to land and civil engineering projects.Students acquire practical knowledge on handling survey instruments like Theodolite, Tacheometery and Total station and have adequate knowledge to carryout Triangulation and Astronomical surveying including general field marking for various engineering projects and curves setting.

CAD Laboratory has been established over an area of 167 sq.m. and fully equipped with 72 high-endlatest configuration Computer Systems with AutoCAD 2014 software for 2D and 3D modelling and 3 nos. of Laser Printers to print or plot drawings. The internet connection is provided to these computers through hi-speed network which can be accessed in both wired and Wi-Fi environment. ThisLaboratory has beenestablished with an objective to gain practical experience in handling 2D drafting,3D modelling and preparation of structural drawings for concrete and steel structures normally encountered in Civil Engineering practice.


Hydraulic Engineering Laboratory has been established over an area of 181 sq.m. and itis intended to make the students aware of the all the aspects which come under the fluid flow.The dynamics of fluids is introduced through the control volume approach, which gives an integrated understanding of the transport of mass, momentum and energy. The applications of the conservation of laws to flow through pipes and hydraulics machines are studied.

The Strength of Materials Laboratory has been established over an area of 124 sq.m.withthe objective to demonstrate the basic principles in the area of mechanics of materials to the undergraduate students through a series of experiments.The experiments are performed toacquireknowledge about strength and related characteristics,nature of materials and other propertiessuch as Compression, Tension, Flexure, Hardness, Impact Strength, Torsion, Young’s modulus ofvarious materials (Steel / Copper / Brass / Aluminum).

The Concrete and Highway Engineering Laboratory has beenestablished over an area of 148 sq.mandprovides good insight into different experimental methods relevant to Concrete and Highway Engineering.Concrete Laboratory provides facilities for testing cement and concrete which includes tests for compressive strength, flexural strength, fineness, and mix design of concrete. Highway Engineering Laboratory deals with testing of materials for the formation of Highways and Railways. The properties of Highway Engineering materials such as impact value, crushing strength and other related properties are ascertained in this Laboratory by conducting various tests such as aggregate impact test, aggregate crushing value test and Los Angel abrasion test, etc.

The main objective ofthe Civil Engineering Association“RIT–STRUCTA” is to encourage and foster the ideals of the profession, to hold conferences, guest lectures,workshop,seminars, industrial visits,technical quiz programme for dissemination of knowledge amongst Civil Engineers in particular and the society at large.

RIT-STRUCTA arranged an Industrial visit to Vaigai Dam
